So you want to be a sports editor? Well, it's not as hard as you think, but it's not as easy as you might think either. To begin with, you do need a journalism degree and some editing experience under your belt. With those two things and the ability to critique others' writing, you too can land a sports editor job in practically any city or town.

Beyond the sports editing job field, with that journalism and editing experience, you may also qualify for sports magazine editing and freelance editing jobs related to sports. Such jobs are abundant, especially in freelance editing, with the Internet world we now live in.

You might not start out editing the top sports newspaper or magazine, but with some work, you too can land the sports editing job of your dreams. So, what qualifications and duties will be expected of you in your editing job, and what can you do to land such a job in the first place?

If you are just at the beginning of your career, you might call your local paper with that journalism degree fresh in hand and offer to write a free piece about the local football game. Believe or not, that simple step can get you in the door. Once you write your article, you immediately become an editor of sorts by proofreading your own work — i.e., checking for grammar and spelling errors. If you turn in a clean piece to the newspaper editor, he or she will almost certainly be impressed with your skills.

But that’s just the first step! Once you have your foot in the magazine or newspaper door, while you’re writing other assignments, offer your editing services at local colleges, create an editing website, write articles, and make sure that you, as the wannabe editor, always carefully edit your own work! While you’re doing all this, you should also get a good feel for what an editor’s job duties are and what they expect of their writers. Do this by asking your own editor constant questions, and see if you are allowed to sit in on any final-edit meetings. Pick your editor’s brain and ask him or her how he or she got started in the sports editing business.

Now that you have a little experience, you might be ready to move on to a larger venue and seek out some sports or freelance editing jobs. Write blogs on sports websites, or better yet, go to those free online encyclopedia sites that encourage editing and edit some sports subject pages. If you know that the penalty corner in field hockey is sometimes referred to as the “D,” write that — you’d be surprised at how many people started their editing careers this way.

Once you finally do land an editing job — whether it’s in freelance editing, sports editing, or sports magazine editing — you’ll immediately have a lot to be responsible for. You’ll most likely have a team of sports writers that work under you, and it’ll be your responsibility to make sure that their facts and sources are correct and to determine how all the sports articles for the day, week, or month will be arranged in your publication.

Beyond your love for editing, sports editing can be fun and exciting, especially since you’ll be able to get out there yourself on the best sports stories. You’ll be able to meet famous and local athletes and interview them for feature stories in your newspaper’s sports section or your sports magazine. It may fall to your managing editor to proof your final copy, but you love sports, right? What’s the fun of it all if you can’t meet your sports heroes once in a while?
