We're a highly regarded global news brand, owned by the Scott Trust — an arrangement that guarantees its independent voice in perpetuity.Headquartered in New York City, Guardian US, is an entirely digital operation that seeks to engage US readers by combining the Guardian's internationalist, online journalism with US voices and expertise.We are now seeking a Philanthropic Editor to join our editorial team.Department: Editorial, NewsdeskReports to: Deputy Editor [Strategy]Normal location: Guardian office in New York, Oakland or Washington DCTerms and conditions: Full time, permanentPurpose of roleOversee, manage and deliver a portfolio of Guardian editorial projects supported by philanthropic funding, including commissioning, editing, and managing freelance teams.Key responsibilities & accountabilitiesWork with senior editors and philanthropy team to Identify and develop new editorial projects that might benefit from philanthropic funding, participate in the development of concept notes and grant proposals.Serve as lead editor for some, but not all, editorial projects; lead the commissioning process with inspired ideas on how to approach sometimes age-old systemic problems; coordinate with global editorial teams on philanthropy projects with elements to be delivered by Guardian US; and have close knowledge of philanthropy projects edited by others in the newsroom.Ensure projects deliver high quality journalism, are relevant for readers and deliver on grant agreements and meet the expectations of funders.Manage project budgets in close collaboration with philanthropy team. Liaise with Executive Vice President of philanthropic and strategic partnerships and her team on all aspects of project delivery.Liaise with other Guardian bureaus and editorial desks (occasionally including global) including news, audience, video and photography to help ensure internal communication and collaboration, including promotion of content.Represent the editorial team in some visits and calls with foundations.Participate in newsroom decisions about philanthropic funding under consideration, and whether GNM will accept external funding which is offered to us, in collaboration with Guardian US senior leadership.Report to Deputy Editor [Strategy], work closely with a senior US team including Guardian US Editor, Deputy Editor [Strategy], Managing Editor and senior editorial managers to coordinate and deliver projects.Liaise with other Guardian bureaus and editorial desks to help ensure internal communication and collaboration, including promotion of contentKnowledge & experienceSignificant experience editing and commissioning at a senior level for a national or international news publication or respected magazine or websiteClear vision of the purpose and aims of the roleWide knowledge of and interest in relevant topicsGood understanding of the Guardian's digital approach to journalismUnderstanding and knowledge of analytics, search and other measurements of audience Good understanding of US libel and defamation lawsUnderstanding of communities, social media and multimediaKnowledge and appreciation of the Guardian's values and styleGood track record of effective people and departmental managementSkills & behaviorAble to generate inventive, compelling ideasExcellent commissioning and editing skillsCollaborative and able to build relations with people at all levels, both internally across multiple departments as well as externallyExcellent interpersonal and management skillsStrong ideas on developing audience and communities, and encouraging users to generate contentAble to work effectively under pressure ImaginativeOrganisedFlexible and adaptableSelf-starterConfident and assertiveFlexible approach to new digital ways of workingAll candidates interested in applying should upload a resume and cover letter as one document.
