Now in its second century, Audubon is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Audubon\u2019s mission is engaging people in bird conservation on a hemispheric scale through science, policy, education and on-the-ground conservation action.  By mobilizing and aligning its network of Chapters, Centers, State and Important Bird Area programs in the four major migratory flyways in the Americas, the organization will bring the full power of Audubon to bear on protecting common and threatened bird species and the critical habitat they need to survive.  And as part of BirdLife International, Audubon will join people in over 100 in-country organizations all working to protect a network of Important Bird Areas around the world, leveraging the impact of actions they take at a local level.  What defines Audubon\u2019s unique value is a powerful grassroots network of nearly 500 local chapters, 23 state offices, 41 Audubon Centers, Important Bird Area Programs in 50 states, and 700 staff across the country.  Audubon is a federal contractor and an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).

Position Summary
The Senior Associate Editor is a full-time journalism position on the team that produces Audubon magazine\u2014an award-winning print and digital publication that revels in its readers\u2019 fascination with birds while probing some of the most consequential issues facing our planet today. We are looking for an editor with the versatility to take on a broad range of stories but with a particularly keen interest in environmental justice\u2014exploring long-standing inequities that affect the intertwined lives of people and birds and bringing readers into the movement to correct these. Working for a century-old magazine that is also driven to innovate and reach new audiences, the Senior Associate Editor will be positioned to pitch and write ambitiously reported pieces, break news, and push the boundary on our multimedia work. Candidates fluent in Spanish will also have the opportunity to strategically guide Audubon\u2019s Spanish-language content to serve a more diverse and inclusive readership.
This position will be remote initially and then will be based in Audubon\u2019s New York City headquarters. Please include a cover letter with linked clips when applying to this position. Audubon believes that building a diverse team will enable us to more effectively fulfill our mission, and we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply.
Essential Functions

Regularly pitch, write, and edit stories ranging from news to explainers to features in print and online.
Help plan and edit our front-of-the book Field Notes section for each quarterly issue of the magazine and periodically contribute to other magazine departments.
Collaborate with Audubon\u2019s art team to execute stories that are highly visual and, where appropriate, leverage multimedia, data journalism, and other journalistic tools.
Assist in the editorial team\u2019s goal of continuing to expand and diversify its freelance contributor pool by seeking out talented new voices.

Qualifications and Experience

At least 5 years of experience working at a print or digital news operation.
Excellent writing and reporting skills and an ability to home in on smart, sharp story angles.
Experience with at least one (or more) of the following beats: environment, environmental/social justice, Indigenous communities, climate change, science, conservation, or wildlife.
