Duties & Responsibilities
The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is seeking applicants to fill a one-year Term position as Publications Assistant at the Peabody Museum Press. The Peabody Museum Press publishes books in archaeology, anthropology, visual anthropology, and museum studies, as well as catalogues of the museum's collections and exhibitions. The Publications Assistant will assist the Director of the Peabody Museum Press in all aspects of daily operations; will facilitate current production schedules; and will undertake initiatives to investigate and establish new publishing protocols. The position may assist with book-signing and promotional events after normal working hours. The position reports to the Director of the Peabody Museum Press.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares manuscripts, illustration files, and production files for delivery to vendors and reviewers.
  • Manages production schedules and post-production activities, including copyright registration.
  • Researches new vendors and systems for editorial, design, production, printing, marketing, and distribution.
  • Provides liaison with distributors, museum store, and warehouses on sales, marketing, and inventory.
  • Performs general office support services including maintaining book records, managing permission requests, archiving files, and maintaining Press database.
  • Reads manuscript and proofs at various stages of production.
  • Other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications
Three or more years of publishing or marketing experience.
Additional Qualifications
  • BA degree preferred.
  • Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, English, or Museum Studies strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with academic publishing on the university level.
  • Excellent facility with computer software including Microsoft, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, Photoshop, web design, and social media.
  • Excellent working knowledge of printing, publishing, or graphic arts procedures and related computer software. Excellent command of vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; collaborative and effective teamwork; proven ability to work independently, establish goals, set priorities, and carry out project tasks with limited direction.
