As part of the team, you will edit scientific articles written by physicians and researchers under the tight deadlines necessitated by a weekly publication, with the high level of scrutiny required for the flagship publication.
Other Responsibilities will include:
Edits technical medical copy, tables, and citations using an XML-based electronic editing system to ensure clarity, accuracy, precision, readability, technical and structural accuracy, and integrity of content while maintaining strict conformity to AMA style and editorial policies, rewriting copy as necessary or creating tables from prose or prose from tables or figure legends if none provided.
Edits major copy abstracts, including verification of data, inclusion of standard abstract headings, and trimming for space when needed. Edits Key Points and writes brief precis summarizing major articles.
Performs research for clarification and verification of medical terms, technical terms, drug names, correct units of measure, reference citations, and medical product names; does mathematical conversions to the international system of units (SI) as necessary.
Edits figures to conform to AMA style and to ensure the integrity and clarity of tabular and graphics content, checking calculations for consistency and conformity with each other and with the text of the manuscript. Edits or creates figure legends, ensuring that every axis has a unit of measure, every symbol or abbreviation is explained, and that data in the graphics match data in the text and tables.
Assumes responsibility for at least 1 department (special feature) in the journal, editing, tracking workflow, coordinating with the section editor.
Reads proofs word for word to verify conformity to editorial and author changes, and adding last minute author changes as required.
Checks format and placement of figures and tables within the text; verifies figure legends.
Negotiates approval of edited copy, figures, and tables while maintaining clarity, precision, readability, and integrity of manuscript and ensuring consistency of AMA style and editorial policies.
Updates references as needed, and ensures completeness of all author information, acknowledgments, conflict of interest disclosures, and article information while maintaining clarity, precision, readability, accuracy, and integrity of manuscript.
Queries and resolves inconsistencies and ambiguities.
Resolves all conflicts between author requests and editorial policies and technical production capability, including deadline disputes on time-sensitive material. Performs liaison duties between the author, the editor, and the editorial/production/media relations staff throughout the publication process and beyond (eg, ensures that all materials meet deadlines, that the author is informed of changes in publication date, etc.,); post publication, investigates any error that occurred in an article ensuring that the error is corrected.
Tracks the manuscript as it moves through the publication cycle, updating the database at each stage.
Advises the director of the progress of all manuscripts and alerts the manager to any problems.
Minimum qualifications of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, a foreign language, journalism, communications, biological or physical sciences, or mathematics.
Two or more years of related experience preferably as a copy editor, production editor, proofreader, or editorial assistant for a medical, scientific, or technical publication.
Background in science, knowledge of medical terminology, and familiarity with research methods strongly recommended.
Familiarity and experience with AMA Manual of Style or similar recommended.
Familiarity with electronic editing systems and XML tagging preferred.
High level of concentration required to edit; attention to detail critical.
Strong interpersonal skills required in regular and frequent contacts with authors and other JAMA Network units such as Editorial and Production to complete procedures and monitor progress through the cycle to meet schedule deadlines.
Ability to organize and assign priority to assignments and to function well under strong pressure to meet fixed deadlines.
